The Fifty-Year Stand of Bijolia

Years before Gandhi’s satyagraha, the people of Bijolia mounted a historic resistance. In 1913, a thousand farmers under Sadhu Sitaram Das left their lands to protest crushing taxes and forced labour. Vijay Singh Pathik later took up the cause, and the movement endured for nearly fifty years before a final settlement was reached in 1941.
