The Spirit of Sult

Answering Mahatma Gandhi’s call, the Sult region of Uttarakhand rose in the Salaam Saliya Satyagraha under Ram Singh Dhoni. Local villagers defied colonial authority despite brutal police violence that claimed many lives. Moved by their fierce resistance, Gandhi famously honored Sult as the ‘Bardoli of Kumaon’—comparing their spirit to India’s most legendary peasant revolt.
