The Outrage of Phulaguri

In October 1861, Phulaguri staged Assam’s first agrarian revolt, known as the Phulaguri Dhawa. Outraged by a ban on local poppy crops and proposed taxes on betel leaf, thousands of Tiwa and local farmers gathered in a massive people’s assembly. When British officers attempted to forcibly disperse them, the farmers fought back with wooden clubs, dealing a severe blow to early colonial rule. Delhivery bows to the valour of the people of Phulaguri, whose sacrifices paved our way to freedom.
