The Stronghold of Shorapur

In February 1858, the princely state of Shorapur, Karnataka became a stronghold of resistance during the 1857 Uprising. Raja Venkatappa Nayaka united local Bedar warriors, refused colonial allegiance, and defended Shorapur Fort against advancing East India Company regiments, sacrificing his throne and life for independence.
